Columbia Pictures is gearing up for a 3-d version of Spiderman. After three successful traditional films helmed by Sam Raimi and starring Toby McGuire, apparently the webslinger needs new blood in the third dimension.
According to Columbia and Sony, Music Video Director Marc Webb a relative newcomer will direct this attempt slated for a July 2012 release. Webb's only credit in feature film is "500 Days of Summer". So far there is no competition for Spidey on the books in the July of 12.
The still untitled film has been written by James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac", "The Rundown", "Basic"), and will be produced by Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin. It has been announced previously that the reboot will focus on Peter Parker in high school as opposed to the more mature Parker we have seen in the Sam Raimi Spiderman films.
I love the idea of a younger Peter Parker but why re-do this series so soon? A young superhero is a great idea, but when is the quick comic reboot going to get old? In the past few years we've seen the do over with "The Hulk" "The Punisher" "Batman" and now "Spiderman". Granted Batman hasn't been seen in several years and the new version is no less than awesome, but still, when will the studios decide to throw in the towel for a while or decide they've got it right? What I mean is, if the Hulk sucked, give it some time to be forgotten, don't drop a new one on us when we're still expecting to see Eric Bana and Jennifer Conolly. Does that make sense to everyone?
As far as the 3-d thing goes, please, I'd rather save the extra three dollars to put towards my snack bar loan. I think Hollywood is already going overboard with 3-d. If it will add to the movie as it did with "Avatar" roll on, but really Spiderman? Once you've looked down once, the thrill is gone...
All in all, Because I am a lover of Spiderman, I give my consent for the new endeavor, but guys please, please give us a "Dark Knight" quality Spiderman this time and keep going until you have nothing left to offer. Get unknowns that love what they are doing if you have to, not bored "A" or "B" listers that will quit right away. We will watch sequels with the same people in it if the stories are good enough. Don't pop one out every year just to fill the schedule. Give us quality and we'll be loyal, I promise...
